The wife of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mrs. Uchechi Kanu, has offered an explanation as to why her husband apologized following the events that transpired in Justice Binta Nyako’s court. Reports gathered that she gave this statement on Saturday.
Reports also stated that during his trial on Monday the 17th of March, Nnamdi Kanu lost his temper and launched a vicious verbal attack on Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court, Abuja. Shortly after the hearing before the judge, Mr Kanu made some allegations against the judge with no proof, claiming she chose to preside over his trial because of ongoing corruption cases against her husband and son. Justice Nyako had adjourned the case and retreated to her chamber.
He said: “Justice Binta Nyako is using her position for personal gain. Her son and her husband are facing corruption charges. And they (the Nigerian Government) told them (the judge and the court) that if they convicted me (they would free the son and the husband). They (the Nigerian Government) sent her to my case so they can release or smoothen the pathway for the husband and the son.”
The video of this event was all over the internet with netizens adding their input to the fire that was already in motion.
Also, recall that the leader of the proscribed IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, made a formal apology to the Federal High Court, Judge Binta Nyako, and the federal government’s lead prosecutor Adegboyega Awomolo, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), over his outburst during the last proceedings of his trial on the terrorism charges. He made the passionate appeal for forgiveness during his re-arraignment before a new judge on Friday and promised to be of good conduct throughout his trial. The apology was contained in a prepared speech delivered by his lead counsel and former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Kanu Agabi whom Mrs. Kanu in her speech referred to as “a towering figure, twice Attorney-General, twice Minister of Justice, and a former Senator”
In her statement, Mrs. Kanu explained that this apology was necessary to restore decorum and facilitate a more amicable legal process. She also added that the events at Justice Binta Nyako’s court rocked the foundations of the Nigerian justice and that Kanu’s new attorney, Chief Kanu Agabi, was required by his status to address the court about them. She said: “These clarifications were duly delivered by Chief Kanu Agabi, SAN—a towering figure, twice Attorney-General, twice Minister of Justice, and a former Senator. Chief Agabi, stepping into Onyendu’s brief, acted to smooth over the ruffled feathers in certain segments of the bar and bench, caused by Onyendu’s legitimate, anger-fueled outbursts against Justice Binta Nyako’s court, which led to her recusal.”
Further, Kanu’s wife acknowledged the apology tendered by Justice James Omotosho who presided over the matter, to Onyendu for the long delays and mishandling of his trial over the years. She further added that Chief Agabi’s intervention was a strategic move that helped in the balancing of Onyendu’s fury with the dignity of the court.
