Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi has finally spoken on the ordeal of his former queen, Naomi Silekunola.
Recall that ex-queen Naomi Silekunola alongside with others, was arrested and remanded in Agodi Correctional Facility by a magistrate court in relationship to the tragic stampede at charity event which claimed more than thirty lives in Ibadan in December, 2024.
The charity event was organized by former queen Naomi Silekunola in conjunction with Agidigbo 88.7 FM in Ibadan, Oyo state; a radio station that is owned by Oriyomi Hazmat. The event aimed to distribute food items to the less privileged.
Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi has remained reticent on the development involving his former queen until now. Speaking through his press secretary, Otunba Moses Olafere who spoke to the Punch Newspaper in an interview, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi stated that God will vindicate the former queen in her ordeal. According to him, the former queen organized the charity event without any motive to cause harm to the beneficiaries of her arms-giving; hence, God will intervene in her plight.
Responding to question on why the Ooni has remained silent on the matter for several weeks and why he would not help her out of her current travail by his influence and connections, Otunba Moses Olafere revealed that the king cannot influence her fate nor determine the outcome of her trial. He said only God and the court will determine the former queen’s fate. He added that the Ooni has since then been praying for her that God will intervene her case.
“The only thing we can do for her now is to pray to God to vindicate her, and the Ooni, Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, believes God will vindicate her because she had good intentions for the program. She has always cared for children, especially the underprivileged, even when she was in the palace. Nobody ever died during such events when she organized them in the past”, he said.
Nigeria in December 2024, experienced about three different stampedes across the country where less privileged persons had gathered to receive food items from individuals and groups sympathetic to their struggling to survive amid the worsening economy of the country.
Aside the more than thirty persons who lost their lives in Ibadan, about seventeen persons in similar fashion died in Anambra and Abuja at such an event organized to gift less privileged persons food items.
