FG reveals how much INEC chairman earns yearly
The Independent Electoral Commission is naturally under the federal government’s payroll.
Reports have revealed the exact pay plus stipends that the INEC boss receives every year.
According to reports, the INEC boss receives a total of ₦7,801,640 per year. A breakdown of this pay shows that the INEC chief receives ₦650,136.65 per month. It is the sum of his salary and other allowance that would aid the discharge of his duty.
When broken down, the INEC chief receives the sum of ₦168,866.66 every month as his salary. In addition to that comes his car maintenance at the sum of ₦126,650 per month. Also, the INEC chairman is at will to hire and keep a personal assistant who would be paid ₦42,216.66 monthly. He is also allowed to h keep domestic staff who receives ₦126,650 monthly and it is attached to the INEC Chief’s paycheck. In addendum, he has a monthly utility allowance of ₦50,660.
Additionally, to cater for his newspaper bills, the INEC chairman receives ₦25,330 for his newspaper bills and ₦33,773.33 for his monitoring bills. When totalled monthly, it amounts to ₦650,136.65 monthly and ₦7,801,640 per year.
However allowances for security and special assistants were not added in the monthly income, rather they are usually provided separately when the need for them arises.
Meanwhile, the INEC is a body set up according to the provisions of the Nigerian Constitution. The body is charged with the tasks of setting up, supervising, handling and running of electioneering activities and election propeer at both federal and state level. The position of the INEC boss is usually by appointment by the sitting president of the federation. The president must first of all, nominate capable and qualified individuals who are subjected to the scrutiny of the Nigerian Senate. When the Senate approves a particular nomination, he is then appointed and sworn in as the chairman of the electoral body of the federation.
