In a politically charged development, former Kano State Governor and 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigerian People’s Party, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, visited former Osun State Governor and ex-Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, at his residence in Lagos.

Kwankwaso, in a post on his official X account, described the meeting as an opportunity to discuss national politics, governance, and Nigeria’s democratic future. However, the visit has sparked significant online reactions, with many urging him to focus on forming a political merger ahead of the 2027 elections.

A major theme in the responses to Kwankwaso’s post was the growing demand for an opposition alliance to challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027. Many commenters called on Kwankwaso to consider merging forces with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s Peter Obi, and former military officer Major Hamza Al-Mustapha. They argued that only a united opposition front could effectively challenge the ruling party.

One user emphasized Kwankwaso’s strong support base in Northern Nigeria, insisting that an alliance would be the best strategy to “reclaim Nigeria’s democracy and ensure true leadership for the people.” Another commenter bluntly urged him to “form a merger with Peter Obi and Atiku,” suggesting that he should consider being Obi’s running mate for a stronger electoral strategy.

These reactions highlight a broader sentiment among opposition supporters—frustration over past electoral losses and a desire for a more strategic, united approach in 2027.

However, not all reactions were optimistic about political alliances. Some netizens expressed skepticism, viewing the meeting as yet another example of politicians making calculated moves while ordinary Nigerians bear the consequences. One user compared the Nigerian politics to a chess game by the politicians, arguing that, as always, “citizens will be the pawns” in whatever power play emerges in 2027.

Kwankwaso’s political future remains a subject of speculation. Having run as the NNPP presidential candidate in 2023, his next moves will be closely watched, especially amid calls for collaboration with other opposition figures. His meeting with Aregbesola—a prominent APC figure—also raises questions about potential cross-party dialogues and realignments in the coming years.
