The president of the United States, Donald Trump, has ordered that the American flags be flown at half-mast in honour of Pope Francis.
This declaration was made on Monday after President Trump posted about the Pontif’s demise, saying, “Rest in Peace, Pope Francis! May God bless him and all who loved him!”
Trump asserted that he gave the order that gave room for all the country’s flags; both state and federal flags be flown at half mast to accord respect to Pope Francis.
Also, President Trump noted that Pope Francis was a good man who was not only hardworking, but also showed love to the world.
He stated: “as a mark of respect for the memory of His Holiness Pope Francis, by the authority vested in me as President of the United States by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, I hereby order that the flag of the United States shall be flown at half-staff at the White House and upon all public buildings and grounds, at all military posts and naval stations, and on all naval vessels of the Federal Government in the District of Columbia and throughout the United States and its Territories and possessions until sunset on the day of interment.
I also direct that the flag shall be flown at half-staff for the same length of time at all United States embassies, legations, consular offices, and other facilities abroad, including all military facilities and naval vessels and stations.”
The president made this call in relation to the news of the death of the Papal Pontiff, Pope Francis, who was declared dead by the Vatican by the Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church, Cardinal Kevin Farrell.
Meanwhile, this is not the first time President Trump is making a statement about the pope. Recall that in 2016, during his presidential campaign, President Trump reacted negatively to Pope Francis’ suggestion that Trump’s proposal to build a wall along the US-Mexico border was “not Christian.
In reaction to this, the US president referred to the Pope’s statement “disgraceful.” He further accused the Mexican government of manipulating the Pope. He asserted that, “For a religious leader to question a person’s faith is disgraceful.”
