Nigeria’s political community is mourning the loss of Honorable Adewunmi Oriyomi Onanuga, who passed away at the age of 59 on January 15, 2025. Onanuga, who was the Deputy Chief Whip of the House of Representatives, represented the Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North Federal Constituency of Ogun State under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Her death was confirmed in a statement issued by the House Spokesman, Akin Rotimi, on Wednesday evening.

“It is with profound sorrow that the House of Representatives announces the passing of Rt Hon Adewunmi Onanuga, who, until her demise, served as the Deputy Chief Whip of the House, representing the Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North Federal Constituency of Ogun State.

“She passed away earlier today, January 15, 2025, after a brief illness.”

The announcement described her passing as a tragic loss and extended condolences to her family, friends, and the people of Ogun State whom she served with dedication and integrity.

 

Onanuga, fondly called “Ijaya,” was celebrated for her tireless commitment to public service and her impactful contributions to the development of her constituency and Nigeria as a whole. Her colleagues in the National Assembly described her as a strong advocate for policies promoting women’s empowerment and social development.

 

Born on December 2, 1965, Onanuga was a distinguished lawmaker with an impressive career that spanned various leadership roles. She was elected to the House of Representatives in 2019 and was re-elected in 2023. During her tenure, she chaired the House Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development, where she championed initiatives aimed at improving the lives of women and children.
