Nigeria’s immediate past president Mohammed Buhari returned to his Kaduna residence ditching the quiet life he has been living for the past years since after the completion of his tenure in May 2023.
After his presidency, Buhari, who chose to stay in his hometown, Daura in Katsina State, stayed away from political talks and engagements.
The announcement about his move was made by his former aide, Bashir Ahmad, in a post on X late Thursday. He wrote: “Today, former President, Muhammadu Buhari returned to his Kaduna residence after spending two years in Daura, Katsina State, since leaving office in May 2023.”
The former president was accompanied by Vice President, Kashim Shettima, Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, and other dignitaries.
Meanwhile, in recent months, there have been reports of divisions among northern leaders regarding President Bola Tinubu’s potential re-election in 2027.
Some prominent figures have expressed dissatisfaction with his administration, leading to discussions about alternative political strategies.
An insider has revealed that the reason Buhari moved to the Kaduna residence is to enable him to work hand-in-hand with other northern leaders in preparation for the 2027 polls. Notably, a summit was planned by northern leaders to address the region’s political future ahead of the 2027 elections.
Also, given the dissatisfaction of the northern elites with President Tinubu’s administration, rumors have it that they plan to “unseat” Tinubu come 2027 presidential polls.
Additionally, former Senator Shehu Sani commented on visits by northern politicians to Buhari, suggesting these meetings might be strategic moves to unseat President Tinubu in the next election.
While Buhari’s return to Kaduna coincides with these political activities, and there are no shreds of evidence that directly links his relocation to efforts aimed at influencing the 2027 elections, rumours have it that he will work with Northern elites to influence the 2027 presidential polls.
Even though Buhari has consistently maintained a stance of political neutrality since leaving office, focusing on personal matters rather than political engagements, the name has found its way into current political talks, Recall that after IBB’s book launch on the 20th of February, one of the statements by the military president asserted that he” kicked” him out of office as a military head of state in a bloodless midnight coup in 1985 due to his violation of human right, among other allegations. While Buhari remained silent on the matter, his interview from 2016 where spoke for him.
The interview details resurfaced and in it, the former president noted that he was removed from office by IBB because he was fighting against top military officers who were carrying out corrupt practices. Emphatically, he noted that he punished the head of intelligence because he “ took an import license from the Ministry of Commerce, which was in charge of supplies, and gave it to Alhaji Mai Deribe.
It was worth N100,000, a lot of money then,” Mr Buhari said. took an import license from the Ministry of Commerce, which was in charge of supplies, and gave it to Alhaji Mai Deribe. It was worth N100,000, a lot of money then,” Mr Buhari said.”
