SDP chairman Shehu Gabam reveals what he discussed with El-rufai amid decampment speculation

The National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Shehu Gabam, has shed light on the recent meeting with former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, describing it as a strategic discussion centered on the future of Nigeria. The closed-door session, which took place at the SDP’s national secretariat in Abuja, included other notable figures such as Major Hamza Al-Mustapha and Otunba Segun Showunmi.

Gabam emphasized that the discussion focused on fostering collaborations among like-minded individuals who prioritize national development over party affiliations. “We are looking for like-minded people who believe in the future of the country so that we can work together and uplift the individual standard of Nigeria,” Gabam stated. He described the meeting as part of the SDP’s broader efforts to engage with political and social leaders committed to Nigeria’s progress.

The meeting has sparked widespread speculation about potential political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, particularly given El-Rufai’s prominent role within the All Progressives Congress (APC). However, Gabam was quick to clarify that the gathering was not about political defections but about addressing pressing national issues. “Our interest is our country first, above any other consideration,” he noted. He stressed the importance of political stability, economic prosperity, and social harmony as key elements of the discussions.

El-Rufai’s participation in the meeting has drawn significant attention, with many questioning whether his presence indicates a potential shift in political allegiance. Gabam dismissed such speculations, affirming that the meeting was a platform for dialogue rather than a recruitment drive. He highlighted the SDP’s commitment to engaging individuals from diverse political backgrounds to contribute to nation-building. “We want to have a peaceful country, a well-coordinated country, economic prosperity, and political stability for investors,” Gabam explained.

The chairman further elaborated that the SDP’s strategy includes offering constructive advice to the current administration while fostering dialogue among stakeholders to address Nigeria’s challenges. This approach, he said, is rooted in the party’s belief that collaboration among diverse political actors is essential for sustainable development.

While details of El-Rufai’s contributions to the discussion remain private, Gabam assured that the meeting underscored shared concerns about Nigeria’s trajectory and the collective responsibility to ensure its stability and growth. The SDP leader expressed optimism about future engagements, reiterating the party’s commitment to uniting individuals and groups for the common good.

The meeting has also prompted questions about the role of opposition parties in shaping Nigeria’s political landscape. Gabam acknowledged that strengthening democracy requires robust opposition and strategic alliances, and the SDP is actively working toward this goal.

As Nigeria approaches the 2027 elections, the SDP’s efforts to engage key figures like El-Rufai could significantly influence the political dynamics. For now, Gabam’s revelation about the discussions reflects a broader vision of inclusivity and collaboration aimed at addressing the nation’s pressing challenges.
