In a recent interview, Nigerian Afrobeats artist Rema reaffirmed his commitment to Mavin Records, expressing deep appreciation for the mentorship of its founder, Don Jazzy. Despite his rising fame and financial success, Rema emphasized the invaluable guidance he receives from Don Jazzy, stating, “I am never leaving Mavin Records… Being under someone like Don Jazzy who knows almost everything is something I can’t afford to lose. I’ll be here forever to benefit from his wisdom.”
Rema’s declaration comes amid industry speculation about his future with Mavin Records. In November 2024, reports surfaced of a potential rift between Rema and Don Jazzy, with the latter expressing disappointment over perceived ingratitude. Don Jazzy revealed that he had invested over ₦2.5 billion in Rema’s career to elevate him to global stardom. He recounted an instance where Rema was paid over $3 million for a performance, from which the label allocated $1.3 million to the artist. Despite this, Rema reportedly felt inadequately compensated and sought to terminate his contract.
Addressing these tensions, Rema advised fellow artists against making impulsive decisions driven by short-term financial gains. He cautioned, “Some of you, when you see small money, next thing na to leave. Before you know it, money don finish and eye clear.” He underscored the importance of long-term growth and learning, suggesting that sometimes “it is better to be the tail of an elephant than the head of a mosquito.”
Rema’s career trajectory under Mavin Records has been marked by significant achievements. Signed to the label in March 2019, he quickly gained prominence with his debut EP, which topped Apple Music’s Nigerian charts. His hit single “Dumebi” garnered substantial attention, and his music was featured on former U.S. President Barack Obama’s summer playlist. In September 2020, his songs were included on the FIFA 21 official soundtrack, further cementing his international appeal.
In May 2021, Rema introduced the term “Afrorave” to describe his unique blend of Afrobeats with Arabian and Indian influences, showcasing his innovative approach to music. This distinct sound has resonated with fans, earning him a dedicated fanbase known as Ravers.
Despite the challenges and speculations, Rema’s recent statements highlight his recognition of the value that Mavin Records and Don Jazzy bring to his career.
