Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been listed as one of the world’s most corrupt leaders of 2024, according to a report by the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP). Ranking third, Tinubu joins a controversial lineup of leaders accused of enabling corruption and organized crime. The announcement has ignited heated discussions among his supporters, critics, and international observers.
The OCCRP, a consortium dedicated to investigative journalism, compiles this annual list to highlight individuals whose actions have allegedly facilitated corruption and criminal activity on a significant scale. For the 2024 report, Kenyan President William Ruto was named first, followed by Indonesia’s former President Joko Widodo, with Tinubu taking the third spot.
The report accuses Tinubu of being involved in activities that it claims have deepened poverty and stalled progress in Nigeria. The rankings, derived from nominations by investigative journalists and anti-corruption experts globally, point to allegations of graft and questionable governance practices during his tenure. However, the OCCRP has acknowledged that its findings rely on nominations and voting rather than detailed judicial evidence.
The report’s release has sparked a wave of reactions within Nigeria and internationally. Critics argue that it underscores the challenges African democracies face under leaders accused of mismanagement and corruption. Supporters of President Tinubu, however, have dismissed the findings as biased and politically motivated.
Former Nigerian Senator Shehu Sani expressed skepticism about the methodology used, suggesting that such rankings could undermine African leaders without robust evidence. “Labeling leaders as corrupt without concrete facts risks creating a narrative based on opinions rather than substance,” Sani commented.
The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) also criticized the report, with its spokesperson Felix Morka describing it as an attempt to delegitimize Nigeria’s government. “This is a calculated effort by foreign entities to weaken Nigeria’s democratic integrity,” Morka stated.
Conversely, anti-corruption advocates view the OCCRP rankings as a necessary spotlight on systemic corruption. Transparency International’s Nigerian chapter emphasized the need for stronger institutions to address corruption at all levels of government.
Since his administration began in May 2023, President Tinubu has faced significant scrutiny over controversial policies, economic hardships, and corruption allegations. Critics suggest that the OCCRP report could damage Nigeria’s international reputation further. However, Tinubu’s allies maintain that he remains committed to implementing reforms despite the criticisms.
Analysts suggest that this development may amplify calls for greater transparency and accountability within the administration. Additionally, it raises broader questions about how international organizations influence perceptions of leadership in developing nations.
The OCCRP’s Corrupt Person of the Year list has consistently drawn controversy. The organization explains that the rankings aim to shed light on individuals who play major roles in global corruption, but it admits that the process is based on expert opinions and nominations rather than judicial determinations.
As Nigerians continue to debate Tinubu’s inclusion, opinions remain divided. Some see it as a crucial push for anti-corruption reforms, while others regard it as an unjustified attack on their leader.
