In a recent report that has sparked widespread concern, Moferewa Bashorun, also known as Bashorun Mo, has been identified as the individual advocating for jihad in Yorubaland due to the region’s rejection of Sharia law. Bashorun, hailing from the Okun area of Kogi State, has a history of public service, having worked as a protocol officer during former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai’s first term and currently serving within the Kaduna civil service.
In a discussion onna Twitter space titled “No Space for Hate Mongering in Nigeria,” Bashorun expressed his frustration over the Yoruba community’s resistance to Sharia law, stating, “It’s time for Jihad conversation to start” in Yorubaland. The jihadist criticized the Yoruba people for opposing the establishment of Sharia courts in southwestern Nigeria and claimed that Muslims’ rights to practice Islam are under threat due to this opposition.
These statements have ignited a significant backlash on social media platforms. Many netizens have condemned Bashorun’s remarks as divisive and inflammatory, emphasizing the importance of religious tolerance and unity in Nigeria. A particular Twitter user known as @DreadHOUNd0 has engaged in an ugly argument with him in the past said this:
“@Bashorun_Ma smile. You are finally famous. I told you last year that Karma would catch up with you someday after you kept dishing threats that you are incapable of carrying out. Keep going to find out where you would end up. “
Some users have called for legal action against him, arguing that his comments could incite violence and disrupt the nation’s peace. The identification of Bashorun as the individual behind these comments has further intensified reactions. Many Nigerians have expressed shock and disappointment, particularly given his background in public service. Some have called for his immediate suspension from his current position in the Kaduna civil service, pending an investigation into his conduct.
In response to the growing concerns over religious tension in the region, the Federal Government has reportedly initiated a covert probe into activities capable of breeding religious discord in parts of the South West. Security agencies have been alerted to investigate groups and individuals linked to extremist activities and to take necessary actions to prevent any escalation. The situation has also drawn the attention of various groups advocating for peace and security in the region. The Fredrick Fasheun-led Oodua People’s Congress (OPC) has urged all six South-West governors to treat the infiltration of insurgents and terrorists into Yoruba forests as a security emergency. The OPC has expressed readiness to collaborate with security agencies to address the menace before it escalates further.
Even after the reports and uncovering, Bashorun_Mo has taken to his Twitter account to mock the reports in Twitter space with his supporters cheering him while concerned citizens and netizens condemn his actions. As the situation unfolds, it remains crucial for authorities and community leaders to work together to maintain peace and prevent any actions that could lead to further division.
