2027 is almost here, different political parties are tidying up their candidate list for the presidential race, and the Labour Party is not left out. The Labour Party has declared its intention to present Peter Obi as its presidential candidate for the 2027 poll. The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Abayomi Arabambi, made this announcement on Channels Television’s Politics Today.

The secretary, during his speech, emphasized that it challenged the ruling party, APC, calling it a rematch against President Bolla Ahmed Tinubu. He declared “that PBAT will not have an easy in 2027, they have come back with Obi to show that they are serious.”

Referring to party members who have resigned, Arabambi asserted that the case of Kenneth Okonkwo, the actor-turned-politician is “good riddance to bad rubbish” and warned him not to speak about the Labour Party anymore. He further noted that he lacked commitment to the LP’s cause and has always worked in support of APC, Tinubu.

When asked about the rumour of a leadership crisis within the party, Arabambi refuted it, stating that the party has remained strong and united, and still stands as a strong opposition for the 2027 poll.

Obi who was LP’s flag bearer in 2023, came third place in the last race with former Vice-President Atiku in second place and Tinubu first. Despite his loss, he garnered strong supporters, especially among young Nigerians. On his part, the ex-governor has remained on the political scene and very vocal on political and national issues, especially the ones he considers detrimental to the lives of the citizens. He and LP contested the 2023 presidential result, however, the Supreme Court and Presidential Electoral Tribunal upheld PBAT’s Victory. He has also condemned the removal of fuel subsidies and the floating of the Naira. He asserted that the policies were badly implemented, leading to an increase in inflation which had worsened hardship in the country. Obi, despite losing his mandate in 2023, still encourages youth massive participation in politics.

As 2027 draws near, the party target is to reignite similar fire and zeal seen in the 2023 polls and also present Peter Obi as a worthy candidate against other contestants, especially PBAT.
