Embattled former speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa has in his first public response to his impeachment by the majority of the members of the Lagos State House of Assembly, countered the narrative that he has been impeached.
Obasa spoke from his GRA home in Ikeja on Saturday, 25th of January, 2025 following his arrival from the United States of America where he was on a private visit during his impeachment.
He was welcomed back to the country by his longstanding ally, Joel Ogunnaike and his supporters who gathered at his Ikeja residence.
Addressing his supporters, Obasa stated that he remains the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly. He said his January 13th impeachment did not follow due process, as a result, he intends to challenge the process that resulted in his impeachment.
He added that his Islamic faith made him to believe in fate; however, his removal as the Speaker will not be regarded as his fate because it did not follow due process.
“My status in the house? I believe strongly I am still the speaker until the right thing has been done. If you want to remove me, remove me the proper way and I will not contest it”, he said.
Obasa was on January 13th 2025, unanimously impeached by the Lagos State House of Assembly. His impeachment happened a few days after report emerged about how he allegedly spent 17billion naira to repair the Lagos State House of Assembly gate.
When asked the manner he intends to challenge his impeachment and whether he would approach the court, Obasa stated: ” You will know . It’s a matter of time. Thank you and God bless you.”
Obasa also described the allegation of financial mismanagement levied against him by the members of the Lagos State House of Assembly as “fictitious and unsubstantiated”.
The lawmaker who has been the speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly since 2015, alleges that his family was locked up by the police who invaded his Ikeja residence during his impeachment.
