In a recent post on X, Bashir Ahmad, the former Special Assistant on Digital Communication to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, addressed the rising incidents of disrespect towards the Quran, particularly in Western countries. He emphasized Nigeria’s forthcoming Quran Convention as a significant counter-narrative to these acts.
Ahmad’s message highlights the contrast between the negative actions of a few and the positive initiatives within the Muslim community. He stated, “While a handful of ignorant individuals engage in acts of disrespect, particularly in the Western world, in an attempt to provoke the Muslim community through their Islamophobic actions, including the disgraceful burning of the Holy Quran, later this month, Nigeria will make history by organizing one of the biggest Quranic events ever held in this part of the world, the Quran Convention.”
Scheduled for February 22, 2025, at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja, the Nigeria Quran Convention aims to celebrate the Quran by uniting scholars, reciters, and believers from across the globe. The event seeks to honor the sacred scripture and reaffirm its universal message of peace and guidance. Ahmad highlighted the significance of the convention, noting, “At a time when attacking and burning of Quran make headlines, this convention will make a louder statement. The Quran is eternal, and its light can never be extinguished.”
The convention, themed “One Book. One Faith. One Ummah,” is organized by the Jama’atu Izalatil Bid’a Wa Ikamatus Sunnah (JIBWIS). It aims to bring together Muslims from diverse cultural, linguistic, and institutional backgrounds under the banner of the Holy Quran. Attendees will witness exceptional Quranic recitations, displays of calligraphy, and connect with a community of esteemed Quranic scholars. The event aspires to foster spiritual growth, intellectual development, and cultural appreciation, reinforcing the bonds of brotherhood and sisterhood that unite all Muslims.
However, the convention has not been without controversy. Some Islamic scholars in Nigeria have expressed concerns over potential political motives behind the event. Critics warn that political interests and financial incentives may be influencing the program. Sheikh Sani Yahaya Jingir, the National Chairman of JIBWIS’ Council of Ulama, questioned the convention’s purpose, suggesting it lacks religious legitimacy. Other clerics have raised concerns about the event being used as a political tool ahead of the 2027 elections.
Despite these debates, the convention is poised to proceed, with organizers inviting Muslims worldwide to participate in this historic celebration. They believe that by honoring the Quran through such gatherings, they can inspire future generations to uphold and cherish this noble tradition, promoting unity and intellectualism within the Muslim community.
