President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has brokered peace between governor Sanwo-Olu and Lagos state house of Assembly speaker, Obasa.
Reliant News Nigeria understands that Obasa’s 2027 governorship ambition dented his relationship with governor Sanwo-Olu and has divided the Lagos state House of Assembly members.
Obasa is accused of undermining the position of the governor Sanwo-Olu in his obvious sought to become the next governor of the state.
Hence, on the 24th of December, 2024, the members of Governance Advisory Council (GAC), All Progressive Congress leadership in Lagos State, governor Sanwo-Olu, and speaker Obasa converged at the Ikoyi home of president Tinubu.
Governor Sanwo-Olu in his opening remark, expressed concern over the manner Obasa is pursuing his 2027 governorship ambition; his provocative public utterances which he said is capable of destabilizing the Lagos state APC leadership.
Obasa is also accused of plotting with some members of the Lagos state house of Assembly to amend the procedure for the appointment and removal of the Lagos state independent electoral commission(LASIEC) chairman. The bill if passed would grant the Lagos state House of Assembly the power to appoint and remove LASIEC chairman.
The president in his remark, expressed displeasure at Obasa over his alleged dishonorable actions against the office of the governor of Lagos state. He enjoined him to be diplomatic about his political ambition. The president also described move to pass a bill which empowers the Lagos state house of Assembly to appoint and remove LASIEC chairman as “laughable”.
President Tinubu would therefore reconcile the speaker Obasa and governor Sanwo-Olu. He charged them to put the interest of the state first in their dealings– even above their personal pursuit.
