In a heartfelt reflection, Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, widow of the late Ondo State Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, has expressed profound regret over her husband’s decision to prioritize spiritual interventions over medical treatment during his battle with prostate cancer.

Governor Akeredolu succumbed to the illness on December 23, 2023.

Mrs. Akeredolu, who survived breast cancer 27 years ago, asserted that her recovery was due prompt medical attention and significant lifestyle changes. She laid emphasis on the importance of medical care over spiritual practices, stating, “If Aketi had listened to me, I wouldn’t be a widow.”

Recounting her own experience, she underscored the critical role of early detection and medical intervention. She warned against relying solely on spiritual or traditional remedies, noting that such approaches can lead to dire consequences. “What came out of their mountain climbing, ‘blessed’ handkerchiefs, water, olive oil, etc., from the GOs and all the noisy prayers like people possessed by demons?” she questioned, underscoring her skepticism towards purely spiritual solutions.

In addition to her personal reflections, Mrs. Akeredolu criticized the current administration of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, describing it as “rudderless.” She registered concerns about the direction of the state’s leadership following her husband’s passing.

Despite the challenges she has faced, Mrs. Akeredolu remains resolute in her political ambitions. She has declared her intention to run for the Imo East Senatorial District seat, with the aim of addressing the underdevelopment and infrastructural deficits in her native region. Her senatorial bid has garnered both support and criticism.

Some groups have supported her political ambition, recognizing her dedication and vision. However, political opponents have raised concerns about potential conflicts of interest, given her position as the First Lady of Ondo State. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo State has accused Governor Akeredolu of using state resources to fund his wife’s political campaign, a claim that has added a layer of controversy to her political journey.
