Bayelsa state governor, Duoye Diri has revealed that he was advised to perform some ritual that will facilitate his  electoral victory at the Bayelsa state off-cycle election in 2019.

While speaking at his home time annual thanksgiving in Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area of Bayelsa, governor Diri revealed that he paid $10,000 to a Senegalese marabout who was contracted on his behalf to carryout some ritual to enable him win the 2019 Bayelsa state governorship election.

The governor however said he did not allow the Senegalese marabout carryout the said ritual due to his Christian faith. According to him, he rejected to engage in such a ritual due his Christian faith which he did not want to compromise despite the pressure.

Governor Diri refered to the person who advised him to seek the spiritual help of the Senegalese marabout as a “senior citizen” in Abuja.

He further stated that his faith in God is uncompromising and that his emergence as the governor of Bayelsa was through God’s miracle; hence, the reason he is often referred to as a “miracle governor”.

Governor Diri is understood to be referring to the events that surround his emergence in 2020 as Bayelsa state governor.
In 2019, the candidate of the All Progressive Congress (APC) David Lyon was declared the winner of the Bayelsa state 2019 governorship election while Diri who contested under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) came second in the election.

Diri would challenge in court the declaration by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)
of David Lyon the winner of the election and eventually won at the supreme court.
