Nigerian singer May D recently spoke about a memorable encounter with fellow music star Davido during their early careers. In a candid interview on the Honest Bunch podcast, May D shared a striking anecdote about his living conditions while residing at the home of music duo P-Square. His revelations shed light on his journey through the Nigerian music industry and his challenges.

According to May D, during his stay at P-Square’s residence, he lived in the boys’ quarters, which he described as cramped and modest. Sharing a single room with the drivers and cook, all of them using a common toilet, was a far cry from the glamorous lifestyle often associated with successful musicians. He revealed that he even slept on a brand-new television carton, using his shirt as a cover cloth. Despite these conditions, May D contributed significantly to P-Square’s music during that period.

May D’s anecdote took a particularly intriguing turn when he recounted how Davido, now one of Africa’s biggest music stars, refused to sleep in his room. At the time, Davido had sought refuge at P-Square’s house following a disagreement with his father. However, upon seeing May D’s living conditions, Davido was reportedly uncomfortable and declined to stay in the room, leaving May D reflecting on the stark realities of his situation.

This revelation has reignited conversations about May D’s tumultuous relationship with P-Square and their elder brother, Jude Okoye. May D had previously accused the Okoye family of mistreatment and neglect during his time with their record label, Square Records. He claimed that despite his contributions to their music, including hit songs like “Chop My Money,” he was not adequately compensated or appreciated. The lack of a proper living arrangement in a house where half of a twin duplex was unoccupied further fueled his grievances.

May D eventually parted ways with Square Records in August 2012. Determined to carve his path in the music industry, he established his own record label, Confam Entertainment, in September of the same year. He went on to release notable tracks such as “Ile Ijo,” “Gat Me High,” and “Ur Eyes” featuring Davido, which helped him maintain his presence in the industry. However, his solo career faced challenges, including sustaining the momentum he had while working with P-Square.

In July 2020, May D made headlines again when he announced his signing with Davido Music Worldwide (DMW), the record label owned by Davido. Reflecting on his journey, May D has been vocal about the difficulties he encountered in the industry. In various interviews, he attributed his fallout with P-Square to internal disputes and miscommunications, including missed opportunities for international collaborations with artists like Akon. Despite the setbacks, May D’s resilience and dedication to his craft have kept him relevant in the ever-changing Nigerian music landscape.

For May D, it is a testament to how far he has come, and for Davido, it is a reminder of the shared history that shapes the vibrant Nigerian music industry today.
