Controversial Nigerian minister for FCT and former governor of Rivers state, Nyesom Wike has reacted to report about former governor Ifeanyi Okowa and governor Sheriff Oborevwori joining the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) at the expense of the People’s Democratic party (PDP).

Nyesom Wike has maintained a rather cold political relationship with Ifeanyi Okowa especially during their reigns as Rivers state and Delta State governors respectively; cold relationship which further plunged in 2023 as Okowa picked the PDP vice presidential nomination at the expense of Nyesom Wike. A development that hugely led to PDP’s presidential election loss and further fragmented the party’s unity and leadership.

Surprisingly through his media aide, Lere Olayinka extolled governor Sheriff Oborevwori and Okowa for publicly identifying with the administration of president Bola Ahmed Tinubu as well as his public endorsement of the Tinubu’s administration.

Wike pointed out that such a gesture shows president Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment towards uniting the country across ethnicity and political divides with the aim of delivering democratic dividends to the Nigerian populace.

Furthermore, he noted that Nigerians who are skeptical in putting their faith in the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu should reconsider and queue behind president Bola Tinubu’s administration’s renewed hope mantra.

The development is seemingly one of the speculated political realignment ahead of the 2027 presidential election in the face of Atiku Abubakar’s renewed vigour to champion political coalition to oust president Bola Ahmed Tinubu from Aso Rock in 2027.

Former vice president Atiku Abubakar’s efforts at achieving coalition and uniting the opposition parties across the country is seemingly counterproductive especially as former governor Okowa who was his 2023 running mate, has jumped the ship. While Atiku seeks to consolidate the opposition parties to challenge president Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s questionable economic policies amid the aggravating insecurity bedeviling the country, the ruling party is understood to be out to frustrate any move by Atiku to achieving a formidable opposition party.

It is also being speculated that more political figures comprising opposition party leaders and governors plan to join the ruling party in coming days. Prominent names which feature in the speculation are governor Fubara of Rivers state, governor Mbah of Enugu, governor Fintri of Adamawa, and former governor Musa Kwankwaso.
