Labour Party’s 2023 presidential flag-bearer, Mr. Peter has admonished citizens to pray for Nigerian leaders and Nigeria. He made this statement at the Service of Songs of a former Deputy Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, Chief Okuji Awa, which took place at the Lagos Presbyterian Church Yaba, on Thursday, March 20th in Lagos.
Asserting that Nigeria possesses all it requires to be great, Obi observed that the country was going through a difficult phase. He further commented that the major challenges in Nigeria are poor leadership and the waste of public resources.
He said: “Whenever I have the privilege of speaking to Nigerians, I will say, please remember Nigeria in your prayers. Remember Nigeria in your prayers. We are going through a difficult time.
“Always put your prayer points to God to touch the hearts of leaders, including me, to use public money for public good.It is not our money. The stealing has to stop.
Also, the former Anambra State governor stated that “Nigerians must pray to God to help leaders to think about the future of the society, especially of their children will live in.
He also urged citizens to remember him and everybody who is listening (themselves ) in prayers, so that God will change everyone’s hearts to think of good for Nigeria.
Meanwhile, Obi is not known to be quiet in the face of injustice. He has openly criticized President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, which led to the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and 27 state assembly members. Obi described this action as “unconstitutional” and “reckless,” asserting that it undermines Nigeria’s democratic progress.
Expressing his concerns on X, Obi stated that such a unilateral decision plunges the nation back into lawlessness, undoing 26 years of democratic journey. He further emphasized that a state of emergency does not grant the president the authority to unilaterally remove an elected governor, highlighting that this move does not align with democratic norms or good governance.
Additionally, Obi criticized the National Assembly’s approval of the emergency rule through a voice vote. His argument was that the 1999 Constitution requires a recorded vote to determine a two-thirds majority. He expressed disappointment that such a significant decision was handled without adherence to constitutional standards, warning that this sets a dangerous precedent for Nigeria’s democracy.
In an open letter to the leadership of the National Assembly, Obi urged legislators to prioritize the interests of the people of Rivers State and uphold democratic principles. He called on them to correct what he termed an “anomaly”and ensure that the executive operates within the bounds of the law.
Also, in relation to the Lagos State corp member who cried out on the level of hardship in the country and called President Tinubu to step up his game, Obi declared his stance by stating that the girl was brave. He urged those calling for her head to be open to criticism as it is a prerequisite to growth.
